February 2017 was a fun month at PELA! Our Volunteer Class helped in our community, we celebrated Valentine’s Day, and our students were able to experience some of Portland’s very cold winter! With temperatures dropping to below freezing, the weather almost caused classes to be cancelled. We were lucky that it warmed up in time for students to make it to school safely.
PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: INTENSIVE IELTS
Our Intensive IELTS class had a record 18 students enrolled this term! Since intro-ducing the program in July 2016, we have seen a growing interest in students who want to take the class.
The class comes with a 3-month guarantee. If a student does not receive a higher score on the IELTS test by 1 whole point, PELA will pay for the test. So far, our pro-gram has been effective and every student has received a score that they are happy with.
This is a more advanced class, so students must be a high intermediate level in order to sign up (this is equal to a PELA level 4-6).
Students who have a scholarship from the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM) can now enroll in this program!
PELA’S VOLUNTEER CLASS
On February 7th and 8th, our Volunteer Class visited the Ronald McDonald House to cook dinner for families. These families travel far to get treatment for their sick children. The Ronald McDonald House provides a place to stay near the hospital so they can be close to their children, as well as free meals for the families.
This is an event that our students enjoy a lot. These families can count on our students to be there to offer comfort and a homemade meal.
“It felt so nice to help these families and it was fun to cook with my friends from PELA!"
- Johanna, Venezuela
PELA CELEBRATES LOVE
This month at PELA, we hosted a Valentine’s Day celebration in the Student Lounge. We had cookie decorating, and all materials needed for making Valentines. Students decorated cookies, wrote positive notes to each other, and we even had a photo booth! If you would like to see some of the pictures from the event, you can visit our Twitter page.
The week before Valentine’s Day, each student’s name was printed on a small card and posted on the wall in our hallway. All students were encouraged to write a positive message for a friend on their card. This was a success and it made the students feel appreciated and loved.
END OF TERM HAPPY HOUR
On the last day of each term, PELA hosts a Happy Hour for students at Buffalo Wild Wings Restaurant. This is a great event because current students can celebrate the end of the term and new students can join and meet new friends before their first term begins!
