Crosswalk Etiquette

Pedestrians are people who are walking.

Portland, Oregon, like many other cities in the U.S., has a special sign to alert drivers to pedestrians. It looks like this:

Portland also marks safe zones at intersections for pedestrians to walk in. These zones, called crosswalks, are indicated by white stripes and look like this:

Drivers should know that it is illegal to enter a crosswalk while a pedestrian is in it. Drivers must wait for pedestrians.
This is different than in many countries where the driver is the king of the road.

If you are a foreigner driving in the U.S. for the first time, be sure to honor pedestrians.

  • Watch for pedestrians.
  • Slow down in residential neighborhoods and in crowded city centers.
  • Wait as pedestrians enter and use the crosswalk.

You can learn more about these laws on the Metro website, here.

Pedestrians will expect you to follow crosswalk etiquette (polite behavior). Be safe!
