Margi Felix-Lund

Margi Felix-LundMargi has a M.A. in TESOL from Portland State University, and a B.A. in Spanish and International Studies from George Fox University.

She joined PELA in 2013.

Why did you become a teacher? "I became an English teacher because I love meeting people from different countries and cultures. I love to travel, but I also love being at home with my family in Portland. Teaching English allows me to show hospitality and welcome students to the great state of Oregon."

What experience do you have learning a foreign language or living in a foreign culture? "I studied Spanish for about ten years and I have lived in Costa Rica, Mexico, Spain, and Argentina. I try to continue learning new languages as an adult, so I really enjoy learning important phrases in the different languages that my students speak."

How has your international experience helped your teaching? "I was an exchange student in high school and studied abroad during university. Being away from home and interacting in a new and different culture is both exciting and difficult. Learning about new languages and cultures is a rewarding and challenging process. As I plan my lessons, I always think about what my students might be experiencing and how I can best help them adjust to and thrive while learning English in a new country."

What do you do when you are away from school? "My favorite thing to do is ride my bicycle, Rocinante! When I'm not on my bike, I love spending time in nature, going to the coast and the forest, hunting for mushrooms, cooking, eating and drinking around Portland, hanging out with my husband and my family, and traveling to new cities and countries."

Why do you like Portland? "Portland is a beautiful city. It is one of the best cities for riding a bike in the United States. I think it is great that students can come here and live easily without a car. Also, Portland has amazing food, coffee, beer, and wine. It is an incredible place to come and enjoy the city while still being close to nature. I love the coast, the mountains, and the gorge. Portland is the best!"

Why do you recommend our school to students? "The teachers are kind and friendly, the students are great, and the English curriculum is useful for a variety of language goals. Most importantly, learning English at PELA is fun!"
