She has been teaching ESL for 6 years, along with3 years teaching Spanish in a local high school.
She joined PELA in 2012.
Why did you become a teacher? "I had amazing teachers who really inspired me to love language, and I wanted to share the love. I really enjoy being able to guide students in their exploration of language and share in their excitement as their skills grow."
What experience do you have learning a foreign language or living in a foreign culture? "I studied abroad in Mexico as a university student, and I have lived and taught in Mexico, Spain, South Korea, and China. I studied Spanish in high school and college and have also studied Chinese, French and Italian as an adult."
How has your international experience helped your teaching? "Having experienced being a language student living in a foreign country myself, I can relate to the challenges and needs of my students. I try to keep my language learning experiences (both good and bad) in mind when I plan my lessons."
What do you do when you are away from school? "I love traveling and taking road trips on weekends, and I try to be outside in nature as much as possible. I'm also a big fan of live music and stand-up comedy, so I spend a lot of evenings in the audience at one of Portland's many cool venues."
Why do you like Portland? "Portland is such a green city and so close to the coast, mountains, and some beautiful waterfalls. It is a great city for hiking, biking, and water sports, but also offers plenty of fun city activities like concerts, festivals, sporting events, museums, great movie theaters, amazing restaurants, etc. In my opinion it is the perfect mix of city and nature."
Why do you recommend our school to students? "PELA is a great place to learn English. The staff and students are very friendly and welcoming, and the school provides a variety of opportunities for you to practice your English both inside and outside the classroom. Also, it's located in downtown Portland, so it's very convenient to explore the city after classes."
