Why did you become a teacher? "Learning a foreign language opens doors to many new experiences and opportunities. I became a teacher with the hope that I could help people benefit from the advantages that come from learning English. I have always enjoyed being a student, and becoming a teacher was also a great way to remain in the classroom."

What experience do you have learning a foreign language or living in a foreign culture? "I grew up in Lugano, Switzerland speaking Italian as my first language. I took ESL classes when I was 13 years old before moving to the United States with my family. Knowing how challenging it can be to learn English has made me a more patient and understanding teacher."

How has your international experience helped your teaching? "After earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, I spent 6 months working and traveling in Argentina. This experience was a great reminder that language and culture cannot be separated. Using the Spanish language to learn about Argentina’s history, cuisine, and art reinforced my passion for learning and teaching languages."

What do you do when you are away from school? "When I am not in school, I am usually outside enjoying all the natural beauty the Pacific Northwest has to offer. I also enjoy eating at the many excellent restaurants in Portland with my wife."

Why do you like Portland? "I love Portland because of its close proximity to nature. We have easy access to beautiful forests, mountains and the coast within 1½ hours from the city. The public transportation is excellent, so I don’t have to drive, and the food and drink options are world-class. Also, the people are diverse and friendly."

Why do you recommend our school to students? "I would recommend PELA because of its convenient location, fun and relaxed learning environment, and of course its wonderful teachers and staff."
